lives of working Portuguese women cleaners - Vida das Mulheres de Limpeza Portuguesas

Susana Miranda a young Luso-Canadian historian will be discussing on October 21 the lives of working Portuguese women cleaners from 1970-90.
That is a good oportunity to share the stories of our imigrant women and the history of Portuguese Immigration in North America. The event will take place at Toronto Library Bloor/Gladstone Branch1101 Bloor St. W.  416-393-7674

Running
from a sobbing land
that never settles.

Hiding
from the nomen they call us by
those names
carried through
the ghostly plains of Atlantis.

Veiling,
the wounds they embrace
in resignation
stains in white sheets
displayed
while we
bearing the scars in obligation
scavenge for a benevolent endearment.

Concealing
our lies we feed love
until dormant the stab becomes mute
under wild berries and purple hydrangeas.

Fleeing
from cries of exasperation
as they look defenseless
holding to a trail of pride
asking for absolution.

All is but a faded name
carved on a willow tree...

Local fruits...indulge! Frutos locais...deixe-se levar!

When you travel food is always part of your journey. I enjoy tasting local fruits. These are from Azores and are abundant  now.
They are called araçás a small fruit which has its flavor somewhat resembling that of guava. It is more acidic, though! The fruit is  small, rounded, with seeds, and soft pulp whose color varies according to species, predominantly orange, yellow light and red. It is used in the preparation of jam.

Quando viajas a gastronomia faz parte da aventura. Por mim gosto de experimentar os frutos locais. Nos Açores e nesta época do ano delicio-me com os araçàs e este ano  para mim foi à grande e francesa!

Sports are an important activity women share all over the world. At the airport we found Club Kairos volleyball team on their way to a new match.
Good Luck girls!!!
Azores is a wonderful place for women to discover  nature, inner peace and dive into the local history.
This is a traditional fishing boat, called BOCA ABERTA - open mouth.
