2012 Courage in Journalism Awards and Lifetime Achievement Award
By seeking to know these courageous women in journalism, the International Women’s Media Foundation has launched once again its search for its 2012 Courage in Journalism Awards and Lifetime Achievement Award. Each year, the Courage in Journalism Awards honor three women journalists who have demonstrated extraordinary strength of character in pursuing their profession under difficult or dangerous circumstances, such as government oppression, threats to personal safety and other intimidating obstacles.
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a woman journalist who has a pioneering spirit and whose determination has paved the way for future generations of women in the media.
Previous Courage in Journalism Award winners include Adela Navarro Bello, Zeta, Mexico; Tsering Woeser, blogger and writer, Tibet; Jill Carroll, The Christian Science Monitor, United States; May Chidiac, Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, Lebanon; Anna Politkovskaya, Novaya Gazeta, Russia (d. 2006); Anja Niedringhaus, Associated Press, Germany and Shahla Sherkat, Zanan, Iran.
Previous Lifetime Achievement Award winners include Kate Adie, BBC News, Untied Kingdom; Molly Ivins, syndicated columnist, United States; Barbara Walters, ABC News, United States and Magdalena Ruiz, Radio Mitre, Argentina.

Ms. Cidalia Faria
Cidalia is an Assistant Crown Attorney in the Ministry of the Attorney General for the Toronto-Downtown Crown's Office currently conducting serious criminal prosecutions as well as managing case files. She has specialized experience in Domestic Violence and successfully participated in the Retroactive DNA Project for the Toronto Region. Prior to her experience in criminal work as both crown and defence, Cidalia also did constitutional research and litigation.
Cidalia has been extensively involved in community initiatives focusing on the promotion of civic participation, education, race relations, gender equality, the health sector, and in a number of Portuguese Canadian community organizations such as the Portuguese Canadian Lawyers Association (PCLA), the Federation of Portuguese Canadian Business Professionals (FPCBP), and the Portuguese Canadian National Congress (PCNC).
Cidalia earned her Honours Bachelor of Arts in English and Politics as well as her Law degree from Queen's University. She also obtained a Masters degree in Law from Osgoode Hall in Constitutional Law with an Equality specialty.

Crianças de todas as nacionalidades no “Sick Kids” Podem contar com as amigas portuguesas
“Obrigado minhas amigas por aqui estarem e por colaborarem nesta festa. Não podemos fazer nada sem a vossa ajuda. Obrigado”. Estas as palavras emocionadas de Maria da Glória Andrade, uma açoriana da Vila de Rabo de Peixe, que fez de uma perca pessoal uma marcha de vitória, quando decidiu há onze anos reunir várias centenas de mulheres, sob o lema da Dia das Amigas, numa iniciativa de solidariedade para com as crianças que sofrem de cancro.
Este ano foram mais de oitocentas as mulheres, que se juntaram no salão da Local 183 para um jantar de angariação de fundos que vão reverter a favor do “Sick Kids Hospital Foundation” mais concretamente o departamento de cancro pediátrico
A causa, que anualmente leva estas amigas a reunirem-se, é a da investigação do cancro infantil, que mata anualmente 250 crianças num total de 14 mil casos no Canadá.
“Todas vós aqui devem sentir-se orgulhosas pelo apoio que estão a dar ao hospital das crianças e à investigação do cancro pediátrico” disse a Relações Públicas da Fundação “Sick Kids”, Mary Ann St. Michael.
Em entrevista ao jornal o Sol, St. Michael afirma ser “através de eventos como este que o “Sick Kids” sobrevive. Toda a pesquisa é financiada por acções deste género. O “Sick Kids” é o mais reputado hospital no Canadá e no mundo no campo do cancro pediátrico. Muito daquilo que se consegue no combate ao cancro nas crianças acontece graças a eventos deste tipo. Sem eles muito do que é feito não teria possibilidade de se realizar”, disse ainda Mary Ann St. Michael.
“Eventos desta natureza são por isso muito importantes para a nossa fundação, que depende muito de doações de particulares,” concluiu St. Michael.
Esta Festa das Amigas organizada por Maria Andrade “começou com um encontro de amigas na igreja de Santa Cruz”. Com o passar dos anos e a adesão de muitas outras mulheres portuguesas e de diversas outras nacionalidades, a sala da Igreja mostrou ser pequena demais para albergar todas as amigas, que desejavam abraçar esta causa.
Em mais um ano, elas continuaram a tradição do Dia das Amigas, a qual emigrou com Maria Andrade uma emigrante da Vila de Rabo de Peixe, para se instalar no coração de muitas mulheres canadianas.
“Comecei a fazer a festa em 2000. O meu marido morreu de cancro e prometi fazer. Comecei a dar ao Hospital “Princess Margareth”, mas agora dou ao “Sick Kids”. Para fazer esta festa ajuda-me a minha família entre filhos e filhas noras e genros e a senhora Gabriela.
Muitas pessoas deixam os seus lugares reservados de um ano para o outro e depois faço sempre um anúncio duas semanas antes do evento. Em 2013 vamos fazê-lo no dia 9 de Fevereiro.”
A festa já transbordou assim o universo português e como diz Maria Andrade já temos mulheres canadianas, italianas e de outros grupos étnicos.
“Uma amiga traz outra amiga e por isso quero agradecer a todas as minhas amigas, pois sem elas não podia fazer esta festa”, remata Maria Andrare já a pensar no evento de 2013.
As mulheres participam também com ofertas para serem rifadas e produtos para venda, nomeadamente joalharia com uma percentagem a reverter a favor da iniciativa.
A festa foi muito animada pela noite dentro. Fátima Martins foi levando a noite com a sua boa disposição como MC. O serão contou com música e dança ao som dos artistas Rui Furtado, Mário Marinho, Conjunto “Unique Touch” e Fernando Correia Marques.
